Peace and Blessings from the New Pope
Vatican City—From the heart of St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV delivered his inaugural address shortly after being elected leader of the Catholic Church. “Peace be with all of you!” he began, greeting the faithful with the message of the Risen Christ, the good shepherd who sacrificed for his flock.
He expressed a heartfelt wish that this peace reach every Filipino family and every corner of the world. This peace, he said, is humble and persistent, coming from God’s unconditional love.
Following Pope Francis’ Legacy
The new pope recalled the blessing Pope Francis gave to Rome and to the entire world on Easter morning. Building on that, he assured everyone that God watches over us and that evil will not triumph. Thus, he encouraged people to move forward fearlessly, united hand in hand with God and each other.
“We are disciples of Christ,” he emphasized. “He leads the way, offering light in a world that deeply needs it. Humanity looks to Him as the bridge to God’s love.”
Building Bridges Through Dialogue and Love
Pope Leo XIV urged everyone to help build bridges by fostering dialogue and encounter. He thanked Pope Francis and the cardinals who trusted him to be Peter’s successor—to walk as one Church, always striving for peace and justice.
He identified himself as a son of Saint Augustine, an Augustinian, reminding the faithful that together they journey toward the heavenly homeland God has prepared.
A Call to a Missionary and Synodal Church
Addressing the Church of Rome especially, he called for a missionary spirit—one that embraces dialogue and openness, welcoming everyone in need of charity, presence, and love. In Spanish, he sent greetings to his beloved diocese of Chiclayo, Peru, acknowledging their faithful support.
Returning to Italian, he declared the Church’s goal to be synodal and peace-seeking, always close to those who suffer.
Prayer and Hope for the Future
On the day dedicated to the Supplication to Our Lady of Pompeii, Pope Leo XIV invited everyone to pray together. He asked for Mary’s intercession and love to guide this new mission, the entire Church, and peace across the world.
“Let us entrust ourselves to our Mother Mary,” he said, “who walks with us and supports us with her care.”
With these words, the new pope set a hopeful and unifying tone for his papacy, calling on all to embrace faith, courage, and peace.
