Tragic Loss of Pregnant Nurse in Negros Accident
BACOLOD CITY – A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Bago City, Negros Occidental, when a 36-year-old nurse, six months pregnant, died after being struck and run over by two vehicles. The tragic event happened on the night of June 1 in Purok Proper North, Barangay Taloc.
Local authorities identified the victim as Maria, a resident of Barangay Taloc. She was crossing the street at a pedestrian lane when the first vehicle, a Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV), hit her. The impact threw her onto the opposite lane, where a sedan then ran over her. Sadly, both Maria and her unborn child died as a result.
Details Surrounding the Accident
Police Lt. Col. Ariel Pico, the acting officer in charge at Bago City Police Station, shared that the MPV driver, 30-year-old Philip from Barangay Cabug, admitted he did not see Maria crossing the road. According to him, the vehicle’s tinted windows and tailing a motorcycle may have obstructed his view. He was returning home from Cauayan, Negros Occidental, when the accident occurred around 9:15 p.m.
Philip said, “I tried to avoid her but it was too late.” After the collision, he immediately got out to check on Maria and attempted to stop other incoming cars but did not succeed.
Meanwhile, the second driver, 59-year-old Salvador from Pulupandan, was on his way home and could not see the victim in time to stop. Both drivers were tested and found not to be intoxicated.
Investigation and Charges
Authorities are still investigating how Maria’s baby was delivered during the incident, awaiting official medical results. Witnesses and locals expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, especially given Maria’s dedication as a nurse heading to work at a rural health unit in Valladolid, Negros Occidental.
Police confirmed that charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide will be filed against both drivers, who remain in police custody. The community mourns the loss of a life devoted to caring for others and the unborn child she carried.
