President Marcos Comments on Vice President Sara Duterte Impeachment Trial
MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos clarified on Wednesday that he never refused to comment on Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial. He stressed that he has “very little role” to play in the ongoing proceedings.
In an interview with a news outlet in New Delhi, Marcos was asked if he supports the removal of Vice President Sara Duterte from her position. He responded, “I have not refused to comment on the impeachment process. I just said, I made it very clear, the executive, the President, has very little role to play in that process.” This highlights his stance on the impeachment trial and his limited involvement.
Questions on Duterte’s Alleged Threats
When asked if Vice President Sara Duterte is capable of hiring someone to assassinate him—a claim she made during a forceful press conference last November—Marcos replied, “I don’t know, you know, but I’m really not in the position to say about what it is about.” His answer showed his reluctance to engage in speculation.
The President further shared that, given his influential role in government, he is no stranger to receiving threats. “You know, in my position there’s always some kind of threat and we take them all very seriously,” he said, emphasizing the constant security concerns that come with leadership.
Political Alliance and Current Relations
Marcos and Vice President Sara Duterte once campaigned together under the “UniTeam” banner during the 2022 national elections. However, their political alliance has since dissolved after Duterte resigned from her post as education secretary last year, signaling a shift in their working relationship.
