President Marcos Names New Solicitor General
On Thursday, May 29, Solicitor General Menardo I. Guevarra accepted President Marcos’ decision not to retain him as the head of the Office of the Solicitor General. This change in leadership marks a significant development in the government’s legal team.
Reports indicate that the President has appointed Darlene Marie B. Berberabe, dean of the University of the Philippines College of Law and a lecturer at the Philippine Judicial Academy, to take over the role. Guevarra’s Response to the Transition
Guevarra expressed his respect and understanding regarding the President’s choice. “I respect and fully understand the President’s decision,” he said, reflecting a professional acceptance of the change. He acknowledged Berberabe’s qualifications, saying, “I am happy for Darlene Berberabe. As a top-caliber lawyer with an impressive management background, she will surely do as well as Solicitor General.”
He also hinted at his future plans, noting, “Maybe it’s time to go back to a quiet and peaceful private life.” This suggests that Guevarra is ready to step back from public service after years of dedication, including his time as justice secretary under the previous administration.
