President Marcos Appoints Raul Villanueva Supreme Court Justice
President Marcos has named Raul Villanueva as the new Supreme Court Associate Justice, Malacañang officials confirmed. This appointment fills the vacancy left by Associate Justice Mario Lopez, who retired upon reaching the mandatory age limit last June 4.
Villanueva’s appointment as Supreme Court Associate Justice marks a significant milestone in his extensive legal career. Before this, he served as the Presiding Judge of Branch 255 at the Las Piñas City Regional Trial Court (RTC). Additionally, he acted as the Presiding Judge for Branch 267 in Taguig City RTC and Branch 4 in Manila RTC. He also held the role of Executive Judge at the Las Piñas City RTC.
From Courts to the Highest Bench
In 2010, Villanueva was promoted to Deputy Court Administrator, a role that paved the way for his eventual promotion to Court Administrator. His experience spans various levels of the judiciary, showcasing his deep commitment to the legal system.
Prior to his judicial career, Villanueva worked across all three branches of government—the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial departments. This diverse background gave him a well-rounded perspective on governance and law enforcement.
In 2021, when former Court Administrator Jose Midas P. Marquez was appointed as Supreme Court Associate Justice, Villanueva took on the responsibility of Officer-in-Charge of the Office of the Court Administrator. His leadership during this period demonstrated his capability to manage high-stakes judicial administrative duties.
Looking Ahead
Local leaders noted that Villanueva’s appointment reflects President Marcos’ trust in his expertise and dedication. With this new role, Villanueva is expected to contribute significantly to the Supreme Court’s mission of upholding justice and the rule of law in the country.
