President Marcos Supports Tax on Online Gaming Operators
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expressed openness to the Department of Finance’s proposed tax on online gaming operators, provided that the tax is supported by thorough research. This stance reflects the government’s cautious yet firm approach toward regulating the booming online gaming industry.
Palace Press Officer Claire Castro shared this during a Monday briefing when asked about the President’s view on the tax proposal. Concerns persist that such taxation might deter investment or push some operators to function illegally. However, the President remains focused on balancing regulation with economic interests.
Government Aims to Strengthen Online Gaming Regulation
“The President is aware of what could happen to those addicted to gambling, and he will not oppose it as long as there is sufficient study regarding the tax that may be imposed,” Castro said in Filipino. This shows the administration’s sensitivity to social issues tied to gambling while considering fiscal policies.
The government also plans to intensify efforts to crack down on illegal and unregistered online gaming platforms. This measure aims to protect Filipino players and maintain the integrity of the gaming sector.
Legislative Efforts and Potential SONA Mention
Castro confirmed that the President is paying close attention to online gambling developments, especially following Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri’s introduction of the Anti-Online Gambling Act of 2025. The bill seeks a complete ban on online gambling in the country.
Although it is unclear if this issue will be highlighted in the upcoming State of the Nation Address (SONA), Castro assured that the President will be informed of these legislative moves and public debates.
Calls for Stricter Controls and Possible Ban
Besides the Department of Finance and Senator Zubiri, Senator JV Ejercito has urged for immediate and tougher regulation of online gaming. He emphasized that online gambling now poses a bigger risk than Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs).
Meanwhile, Lanao del Sur’s 1st District Representative Zia Alonto Adiong advocates for an outright ban on all online gambling activities. He reasoned, “if the country was able to prohibit POGOs, then online gambling should also be stopped.” This reflects growing political momentum to address the issue comprehensively.
