President Marcos Supports Farmers with New Irrigation Equipment
President Marcos emphasized that his administration will continue delivering programs for farmers, recognizing them as a vital pillar of the nation. He expressed deep gratitude, saying, “Buong puso po ang pasasalamat namin sa inyo. At hindi po titigil ang administrasyong ito sa pagpapatupad ng mga programa na magpapabuti ng iyong mga kinabukasan.”
On June 2, the President led the turnover of 229 newly-procured operations and maintenance vehicles and equipment. This was part of the third tranche of the National Irrigation Administration’s (NIA) Re-fleeting Program held in Barangay Wawa, Taguig City. This initiative, a key government response to climate change, aims to help farmers face challenges such as El Niño, extreme heat, and erratic rainfall.
Boosting Agricultural Resilience Through Re-fleeting
The new fleet allows the NIA to improve irrigation service delivery amid growing demands. Marcos highlighted the importance of these resources by stating, “Sa pamamagitan ng mga sasakyan at gamit na ito, may pagkain sa hapag at mas matatag ang sektor ng ating agrikultura.”
He also noted the unpredictable weather patterns due to climate change, which complicates farming cycles. “Napakahalaga ng re-fleeting program ng NIA lalo na po sa panahon ngayon. Mabigat ang pagsubok na kinakaharap ng ating mga magsasaka dahil nga sa dinudulot ng climate change—mas matinding init, mas malalang ulan, at pabago-bago at hindi malaman kung ano dry season na, kung wet season,” Marcos explained.
Enhancing Irrigation Systems Nationwide
The NIA manages 257 National Irrigation Systems and 8,802 Communal Irrigation Systems. It is in charge of repairing, operating, and maintaining key canals and infrastructure. The additional vehicles and equipment will help the agency perform regular operations more efficiently, such as clearing silt and debris, repairing damages, and moving heavy machinery to needed locations.
Included in this tranche are 17 mini buses designed to improve NIA personnel’s mobility during field inspections, project monitoring, consultations, and coordination with other agencies. Marcos shared that these vehicles will streamline staff deployment, cut operational costs, and provide safer, more comfortable transportation, especially for long trips to remote areas.
Call for Proper Use and Maintenance
In his address, President Marcos urged NIA officials and staff to care for and maintain the new equipment responsibly. “Huwag natin sasayangin ang tiwalang ipinagkaloob sa atin ng taumbayan,” he reminded them, emphasizing the importance of trust and accountability.
This enhanced fleet is a critical step in strengthening the agricultural sector and securing food supply amidst climate challenges. The government’s continuous support aims to empower farmers and ensure their futures remain bright.
