President Marcos Declares Centennial Year of Manlilikha ng Bayan

MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos officially declared June 25, 2025, to June 24, 2026, as the Centennial Year of Manlilikha ng Bayan Haja Amina Appi. This significant proclamation honors her legacy and contributions to Filipino cultural heritage.

Under Proclamation No. 963, signed on July 4, the President assigned the National Commission for Culture and the Arts to lead, coordinate, and supervise the commemorative activities throughout this yearlong celebration. The declaration encourages all government agencies, government-owned or -controlled corporations, state universities, local government units, NGOs, and the private sector to actively support and participate in the observance.

Celebrating a National Living Treasure

Haja Amina Appi, a master mat weaver from the Sama community in Tawi-Tawi, earned the prestigious title of Manlilikha ng Bayan (National Living Treasure) for her unmatched skill and artistry in traditional mat weaving. Her creations, known for their intricate patterns and vibrant colors, have gained both national and international acclaim, symbolizing the rich indigenous Filipino art.

Her passing on April 2 at the age of 87 marked a moment of reflection on her invaluable cultural contributions. Local leaders noted her legacy as a treasure that continues to inspire generations.

Promoting Maritime and Archipelagic Awareness

In addition, President Marcos issued Memorandum Circular No. 87 on July 11, directing all government agencies and encouraging local government units and the private sector to promote awareness of the Philippines as a maritime and archipelagic nation.

The circular mandates national agencies, including government-owned corporations, to support programs and campaigns that highlight the country’s maritime heritage. It also calls for full cooperation in the observance of MANA Mo (Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month) every September.

  • Actively support and promote relevant awareness initiatives.
  • Render full cooperation during the annual MANA Mo celebration.

The Presidential Communications Office will implement communication strategies to effectively disseminate information supporting these initiatives. Funding for initial implementation will be sourced from current agency budgets, with future costs integrated into regular budget proposals.

Commemorating Islamic Heritage

Furthermore, Republic Act No. 12228 was signed into law on July 9, declaring November 7 a special national working holiday. This day honors the establishment of the first Philippine mosque and the introduction of Islam in the country, recognizing the vital role of Islam in Filipino history.

These efforts collectively aim to deepen national pride and cultural awareness among Filipinos nationwide, local leaders noted.
