Government Moves to Protect Banana Industry
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has urged swift government action to safeguard the country’s banana industry and strengthen the Philippines’ export position. This call to action emphasizes the importance of the banana industry to the nation’s agricultural economy and export markets.
During a recent briefing, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro shared that the Department of Agriculture (DA) has already requested funding to support banana farmers, particularly smallholder growers. “The directive from the President focuses on addressing urgent threats to the industry,” local officials reported.
Addressing Pest and Disease Threats
One of the main concerns raised by growers involves pests and diseases that could severely impact banana production. The DA is prioritizing funds to help farmers combat these challenges. Community members noted that protecting the plantations from such threats is vital to sustaining both local consumption and exports.
Overcoming Trade Barriers in Key Markets
The administration also aims to tackle trade obstacles affecting banana exports. Japan, one of the Philippines’ top banana markets, imposes high seasonal tariffs—8 percent during summer and rising to 18 percent in winter. These tariffs reduce the competitiveness of Filipino bananas in this crucial market, officials explained.
Expanding Export Varieties and Markets
To diversify and boost exports, the government is increasing production of the Cardaba banana variety. Export targets include Australia, the United States, the Middle East, and other prospective buyers, sources said. Additionally, efforts are underway to enhance exports of value-added banana products such as steamed and frozen bananas and banana chips.
Bananas: A Valuable Philippine Crop
Bananas remain one of the country’s most valuable fruit crops. Varieties such as Cavendish, Saba, and Lakatan contribute significantly to both domestic markets and exports. Strengthening this sector aligns with broader agricultural development goals and export growth strategies, community members noted.
