Government Achieves P20-Per-Kilo Rice Promise
Navotas City lone district representative Toby Tiangco has praised President Marcos for delivering on his P20-per-kilo rice promise during the recent campaign for the presidency. Tiangco emphasized that this achievement signals progress in making affordable rice accessible to more Filipinos.
“Natupad na ng Pangulo ang kanyang pangakong ₱20 kada kilong bigas,” Tiangco said in a statement on May 29. He added, “Sa tulong at pagtutulungan ng mga ahensya ng pamahalaan, patuloy po nating palalawakin ang programang ito upang maisakatuparan ang layunin ng administrasyon na mabigyan ng akses ang mas nakararami.”
Expanding Access Through Government Collaboration
Tiangco credited the Department of Agriculture (DA) for successfully implementing the President’s promise through the Kadiwa Program. This initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to addressing food security and alleviating hunger.
Currently, the P20-per-kilo rice offer prioritizes vulnerable groups such as low-income families, senior citizens, solo parents, and persons with disabilities. Tiangco expressed optimism that the pilot collaboration between the DA and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) will help extend the program’s reach to minimum wage earners.
Benefits for Both Consumers and Farmers
The representative also applauded the program’s expansion beyond Luzon, now reaching Visayas as well. He highlighted the dual benefits of the program, saying, “Hindi lang ang mga konsyumer kundi pati ang ating mga magsasaka ang nakikinabang sa programang ito.”
Through this effort, the government aims to ease financial burdens on Filipino families while ensuring fair compensation for farmers’ hard work. This balance ensures that the program supports the entire rice supply chain, from producers to consumers.
