President Marcos Stresses Digital Security Importance
MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. emphasized the vital role of digital security in preserving memories and protecting information in today’s world. At the grand launch of the VITRO Sta. Rosa (VSR) Data Center in Laguna, he highlighted how technology safeguards data even after people are gone.
The VSR Data Center is the Philippines’ first artificial intelligence-ready facility and its largest hyperscale data center. Marcos called attention to the necessity of strong digital infrastructure, especially for sensitive and private data.
Data Center Launch Reflects Commitment to Digital Security
“In today’s world, data is as critical as water and electricity. We need to strengthen our digital infrastructure, especially for critical, private, and confidential data,” Marcos said. “We need to safeguard our digital security. We need to secure our digital future. So, how important, in fact, is it to secure digital information systems?” he asked.
Adding humor to his speech, the president compared digital security to the way couples announce their relationships on social media. “Itong mga panahon na ito, paano natin nalalaman kapag in a relationship na ang dalawang tao? Nowadays they call it an Instagram hard launch—posting of romantic pictures sa IG na may caption ‘Found my Forever’ or such like,” he said, eliciting laughter from the audience.
He also referred to the “soft launch” of relationships on social media, citing his own son’s posts. “Mayroon ding soft launch. I look at the social media posts of Sandro [Ilocos Norte 1st District Rep. Ferdinand Alexander ‘Sandro’ Marcos] siya ang nagturo sa akin nito,” he added.
Preserving Memories Through Digital Security
On how couples signal breakups online, Marcos mentioned actions like unfollowing or blocking each other. Yet, he noted that sometimes people still peek into archives, hoping to find leftover memories. “Pero minsan, napapasilip pa rin sa archive, na nagbabaka-sakaling may naiwan pang picture. Parang may memories. Buti na lang may data center na tayo—kasi kahit siya ay hindi na bumalik, ‘yung alaala, naka-backup pa rin. ‘Yan ang sinasabi natin tech has your back,” he said.
Marcos also reiterated the government’s commitment to advancing the country’s technology sector. “There is some work left to do but we are ready to do that work so we can be an equal player in the world of data and data processing,” he stated.
Expanding Digital Progress Beyond Metro Manila
“This launch also reflects our commitment to regional development. We bring the digital progress beyond outside of Metro Manila and into the heart of our provinces,” Marcos added. The VSR Data Center supports cloud services, high-performance enterprise solutions, and AI-driven technologies.
Located in Laguna, the VSR site connects to key VITRO hubs in Makati City, Parañaque City, and Pasig City, ensuring reliable and scalable network performance.
