President Marcos Inspects Pasig–Marikina River Channel Improvement

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. recently led the inspection of the Pasig–Marikina River Channel Improvement Project Phase IV flood control in Barangay Sto. Niño, Marikina City. This initiative aims to bolster flood defenses in the National Capital Region, an area vulnerable to seasonal heavy rains and typhoons.

The Pasig–Marikina River Channel Improvement project focuses on strengthening critical flood control measures. It includes constructing dikes, reinforcing riverbank walls, installing floodgates, and enhancing water flow management to reduce the risk of flooding in nearby communities.

Project Goals and Progress Updates

During the site visit, President Marcos was briefed on the current construction progress. Officials noted that the project is designed to provide vital protection not only for Marikina but also for Bulacan and Metro Manila. Public Works and Highways Secretary Manuel Bonoan explained, “This will provide protection for Marikina, Bulacan, and, of course, Metro Manila because the floodwaters from the watershed will not be directly going to Metro Manila.”

Secretary Bonoan further shared that the Department of Public Works and Highways is finalizing a comprehensive inventory and status report of nearly 9,855 flood control projects nationwide. This effort comes in response to President Marcos’ directive to assess and advance flood mitigation infrastructure across the country.

Funding and Future Plans

These flood control projects are funded through the General Appropriations Act, ensuring that the national government supports their implementation. Bonoan emphasized, “These are projects that are already incorporated in the General Appropriations Act, which is the law. And this is the law, actually, that we are implementing the projects under the General Appropriations Act.”

Moreover, discussions are underway with the Japanese government to secure additional financing for flood control efforts. Officials also welcome private sector participation to further strengthen these initiatives, highlighting a collaborative approach to disaster resilience.

Importance of Flood Control in Metro Manila

Flooding remains a significant challenge for Metro Manila and surrounding provinces, especially during the southwest monsoon and typhoon seasons. The Pasig–Marikina River Channel Improvement Project Phase IV is a critical step in reducing the impact of rising floodwaters, as seen recently during heavy rains enhanced by Typhoon Carina.

Community members have expressed hope that these infrastructure improvements will safeguard lives and properties. Effective flood control measures can mitigate displacement and economic losses caused by frequent flooding.

As the project progresses, authorities continue to monitor its impact and identify opportunities to expand flood resilience programs across the country.
