President Marcos Inspects Tangos-Tanza Navigational Gate Damage
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. visited Navotas City on Saturday to personally inspect the damaged Tangos-Tanza Navigational Gate, a vital structure protecting the area from flooding. The 30-year-old gate, key to controlling the water levels of the Navotas River, is currently under repair after sustaining significant damage.
Joining the President were Navotas City representatives, including Rep. Toby Tiangco and Mayor John Rey Tiangco. The ongoing repairs to the Tangos-Tanza Navigational Gate have been linked to the collapse of a nearby river wall in Barangay San Jose, which triggered severe flooding in Navotas City and neighboring Malabon.
State of Calamity Declared Amid Flooding Crisis
In response to the disaster, both Navotas and Malabon city governments declared a state of calamity. The flooding was worsened by the enhanced southwest monsoon, locally known as “habagat,” compounded by high tide and the gate’s damage. Local leaders emphasized the critical role this infrastructure plays in protecting communities from frequent flooding.
President Marcos also visited the Tanza National High School, which serves as a temporary shelter for displaced families. There, he met with evacuees and interacted with children staying at the evacuation center. He was accompanied by Public Works Secretary Manuel Bonoan, who provided updates on the situation and relief efforts.
Relief Operations and Support for Displaced Residents
As of July 23, approximately 162 families, totaling 538 individuals, were taking refuge at the school. During the visit, relief assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development was distributed to the affected residents. The President’s visit underscored the government’s commitment to addressing the aftermath of the flooding and restoring crucial infrastructure.
Local officials and sources said that repairing the navigational gate is a top priority to prevent future flooding and protect the livelihood of residents. The community remains hopeful that these efforts will bring relief and strengthen the city’s defenses against natural disasters.
