Marcos Jr. Upholds Trust in DPWH Secretary Amid Corruption Probe
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. continues to place his trust in Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Manuel Bonoan despite allegations of corruption linked to flood control projects nationwide, officials reported Tuesday.
During a press briefing, Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro confirmed that the President’s confidence in Secretary Bonoan remains steadfast even as the government investigates these flood control projects.
Investigation Process and Department’s Role
Castro clarified that while the DPWH will support the probe by providing necessary documents and information, it will not directly participate in the investigation. Instead, the Regional Project Monitoring Committees will lead the inquiry, with the Department of Economy, Planning and Development (DepDev) overseeing the process.
“The trust of the President in Secretary Bonoan remains,” Castro said in Filipino during the press conference, emphasizing that the department’s role is limited to cooperation through data sharing.
Accountability and Transparency Emphasized
Officials noted that President Marcos Jr. is committed to holding accountable anyone found involved in corruption, regardless of personal relationships or positions. Castro stressed, “Kahit malapit sa puso niya o kaibigan, hindi niya palalampasin — ang mga dapat panagutin ay pananagutin.”
Once the investigation concludes, the President himself will identify government officials implicated in corrupt practices related to flood control projects, if any are found, sources said.
Ongoing Efforts to Combat Corruption
Community members and local leaders highlighted that the administration is determined to maintain transparency and integrity in public works, especially in critical infrastructure projects like flood control that affect millions of Filipinos.
Despite the challenges, Secretary Bonoan’s leadership remains trusted by the President as the government pushes forward with reforms and oversight mechanisms to ensure project integrity.
