President Marcos Weighs Online Gambling Ban
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. remains open to the possibility of banning online gambling in the Philippines. Officials reported that the President is carefully considering the issue and has not yet made a final decision on the country’s online gambling policy.
As the government finalizes the 2026 national budget, the President is set to consult with various stakeholders to gather their views. This approach underscores the administration’s commitment to addressing the complexities surrounding online gambling thoughtfully and responsibly.
Consultations with Stakeholders Planned
Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro explained that President Marcos wants to hear from all affected parties before deciding. “Dapat pag-aralan ito nang mabuti at huwag magpadalos-dalos dahil kailangan nating marinig ang lahat ng stakeholders at concerned parties tungkol dito. Ang problema ay hindi ang paglalaro mismo, o ang pagsusugal, o online gaming, kundi ang adiksyon sa pagsusugal — iyon ang dapat unahin na tugunan,” Castro said during a press briefing.
She added that the President’s current stance is only his personal opinion. “Kung sa pag-uusap na iyon kasama ang iba pang mga stakeholders ay sabihin na dapat ipagbawal ito, gagawin iyon ng Pangulo,” she noted. The exact date for the consultation has yet to be finalized, but Church representatives are among those expected to participate.
Legislative Measures Address Online Gambling
Meanwhile, several bills seeking to ban online gambling and its promotion are currently pending in the Senate. Lawmakers supporting these measures cite the negative social consequences of online gambling, particularly its impact on minors and vulnerable groups.
Community leaders and officials have expressed concerns about gambling addiction and its broader effects on Filipino families and society. The government’s cautious approach reflects the need to balance economic interests with social responsibility.
Focus on Gambling Addiction
President Marcos emphasizes that the core issue is not gambling itself but the addiction that can arise from it. Officials reported that solutions should prioritize addressing gambling addiction to protect individuals and communities.
As discussions continue, many await the outcomes of the consultations to see how the government will proceed with regulating or potentially banning online gambling.
