President Marcos Not Open for Dialogue on Impeachment Trial
Malacañang has firmly stated that President Marcos will not engage in any dialogue regarding the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. This clarification came after Senate President Francis Escudero mentioned that the Palace need not intervene in the impeachment proceedings.
Palace Press Officer and Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro addressed the issue during a briefing on June 17. She emphasized, “Wala po akong binanggit na makikialam or open for dialogue ang Presidente when it comes to impeachment issues.” She clarified that the President’s involvement is limited strictly to legislative matters, such as bills and laws, but does not extend to impeachment cases.
Presidential Limits on Intervention
Castro explained, “Maliwanag ko pong sinabi na maaari lang po siyang makipagdayalogo kung hindi na maganda ang sitwasyon patungkol sa mga issue sa bills, sa batas.” This means the President may only step in if there are serious problems concerning legislative issues. However, impeachment matters remain outside his scope.
The Palace official also expressed hope that Escudero would understand the clarification. “Sana makarating po ito kay Senate President Chiz Escudero dahil alam ko po na ang kanyang opinion ay tama, pero parang mali po kasi yung pagkakatanong sa kanya,” Castro said. She pointed out that Escudero’s views were correct, but the question posed to him may have been misleading.
Reiterating the President’s Position
To avoid confusion, Castro reiterated, “Muli, uulitin ko po ah, hindi po open ang Pangulo sa anumang dayalogo patungkol sa impeachment trial or proceedings.” This statement firmly closes the door on any potential Palace-led discussions about the impeachment process.
In summary, the Palace maintains that President Marcos respects the independence of the impeachment trial and will not intervene. His role remains focused on legislative issues, preserving the separation of powers.
