President Marcos Selects Next Philippine National Police Chief

President Marcos Has Chosen Next Philippine National Police Chief

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary confirmed on Monday, May 26, that President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has already selected the next chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP). This announcement signals a significant development in the leadership of the police force.

However, the identity of the new police chief remains confidential. When asked for details, the secretary declined to reveal the name, emphasizing that the President will be the one to officially announce the appointment. Pressed for a clue, he humorously replied, “police siya,” eliciting laughter from the audience at Camp Karingal.

The official described the chosen candidate as “Excellent, very qualified, very dynamic, good track record,” highlighting the high standards set for the position.

Calls for Longer Tenure to Ensure Consistent Leadership

During the press briefing, the DILG Secretary expressed his preference for the next Philippine National Police chief to serve a longer term. He explained that, typically, a PNP chief’s tenure lasts only about a year or slightly longer. This short period, he noted, disrupts the continuity of the police force’s vision and goals.

“Ang nangyayari kasi sa atin, a tenure of a chief PNP will only last one year, a little more than one year. Kailangan natin merong continuing vision na may buy-in ng lahat ng PNP as the years go by,” he said, emphasizing the need for a shared vision that endures beyond individual leadership.

Currently, directives and mission statements tend to shift with each new chief, which complicates long-term planning. The Secretary stressed the importance of having a unified goal “no matter the chief PNP is.”

Current Chief’s Term Extended as Selection Process Nears

At present, Police General Rommel Marbil continues to serve as PNP chief, with his term extended until June 7 following the President’s decision to prolong his service in February. The mandatory retirement age for police officers is 56, but there is a proposal to increase it to 60 to retain experienced personnel longer.

Top Contenders for the Chief PNP Post

Reports indicate several high-ranking officers are being considered for the role. Among the frontrunners are Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., deputy chief for administration; Lt. Gen. Robert Rodriguez, deputy chief for operations; Lt. Gen. Edgar Alan Okubo, chief of directorial staff; Major Gen. Nicolas Torre III, head of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group; and Major Gen. Anthony Aberin, chief of the National Capital Region Police Office.

The selection of the next PNP chief is crucial in shaping the future direction and stability of the police force. The new leader is expected to carry forward a consistent vision and maintain strong leadership to enhance public safety and police efficiency.
