President Marcos Strengthens National Task Force Diwalwal
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has signed an executive order to strengthen the National Task Force Diwalwal. This task force oversees mining operations within the Diwalwal Mineral Reservation Area in Davao de Oro province. The move aims to better manage the gold-rich area and ensure sustainable development.
The executive order, EO No. 88, was signed on July 4. It calls for the reconstitution of the National Task Force Diwalwal and names the Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources as its new chairperson. This shift highlights the government’s commitment to responsible mining operations and environmental protection.
Expanded Role and Membership of the Task Force
The task force’s membership includes high-ranking officials from various government agencies. Alongside the DENR Secretary, members include representatives from the Office of the President, the Department of National Defense, the Department of the Interior and Local Government, and the Mindanao Development Authority. This diverse composition strengthens collaboration across key sectors.
According to the order, the task force will supervise all mining activities in the area. It will also coordinate government initiatives focused on rehabilitating and developing the gold-rich community in Diwalwal. This ensures that mining efforts balance economic benefits with environmental and social concerns.
Government Support and Funding
The executive order directs all relevant government agencies and local government units in Davao de Oro to fully support and cooperate with the task force. It also encourages private sector involvement to achieve the order’s goals effectively.
Funding for the task force’s initial activities will come from existing budgets of its member agencies. Future funding requirements will be incorporated into their regular budget proposals. This financial plan complies with standard budgeting, accounting, and auditing rules.
Background: Life in the Gold-Rich Diwalwal Area
For decades, small-scale miners and settlers have lived in the gold-abundant Mt. Diwalwal area in Monkayo, Compostela Valley (now Davao de Oro). Many have raised their families amid the challenges and opportunities of small-scale mining. Local sources noted that the community relies heavily on mining for livelihood, but environmental and safety issues remain concerns.
The government’s renewed focus through the National Task Force Diwalwal aims to address these challenges while promoting sustainable growth. Officials emphasized the importance of balancing economic activity with environmental care and community welfare.
