ASEAN Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence Gains Support
President Marcos has voiced strong support for the creation of an ASEAN Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence, emphasizing that responsible and inclusive technology must be central to the region’s digital future. This four-word keyphrase, “Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence,” highlights the focus of ASEAN’s efforts to shape a responsible AI ecosystem.
Speaking at the ASEAN Leaders’ Interface with the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC), the President expressed the Philippines’ full endorsement of the proposed AI engagement platform. He described it as a “strategic approach to digital governance” that could guide the development of AI technologies in Southeast Asia.
“Such Centre can lead in shaping an AI ecosystem that empowers our people, safeguards our values, and contributes to sustainable development throughout our region,” Marcos said on May 26.
He urged both the private and public sectors within ASEAN to collaborate closely to ensure AI’s benefits reach all members of society. “By fostering collaboration on responsible and inclusive AI, [the AI Engagement Platform] ensures that technological advancements benefit all segments of society,” he added.
Building a Digital Future for ASEAN
This call for cooperation is part of ASEAN’s broader vision for 2045, aiming for a connected and resilient regional economy. According to sources familiar with the matter, the Philippines fully backs the transformation toward a digital economy and supports initiatives led by the ASEAN Business Advisory Council.
Formed in 2001, ASEAN-BAC acts as the main private sector body within the bloc, bringing together business leaders and policymakers to push the region’s digital agenda forward.
Focus on Workforce Development and Digital Economy
President Marcos also highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships in advancing the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement. He stressed that investments in digital infrastructure and human capital are essential to prepare ASEAN for the future.
“Above all, we must continue to invest in our people,” he said, noting that “a digitally literate, adaptable workforce is the foundation for any progress we hope to achieve.”
He praised the ASEAN Talent Development and Mobility Initiative for its role in readying workers for emerging job demands. The President welcomed further efforts to enhance student mobility, digital literacy, and skills upgrading across the region.
Trade Facilitation and MSME Support
Addressing trade matters, President Marcos acknowledged ASEAN-BAC’s recommendation to improve the implementation of the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA). However, he cautioned against excessive regulation that might hinder trade flows.
“While regulations are certainly necessary, we must ensure that they do not become trade barriers,” he said.
He suggested exploring “strategic trade management” to maintain open yet secure commerce within ASEAN.
Furthermore, the President expressed appreciation for ASEAN-BAC’s efforts in supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which constitute over 99 percent of businesses in the region. He welcomed the roadmap for the Unique Business Identification Number (UBIN) to help MSMEs expand beyond local markets.
Assuring Business Confidence Amid Global Challenges
Despite ongoing global tensions and shifting trade policies, Marcos assured that ASEAN’s stability and commitment to cooperation should inspire confidence among businesses.
“Even as trade tensions and policy uncertainties remain, the private sector can find assurance in ASEAN’s quiet resolve to uphold stability and deepen economic cooperation,” he said.
“By ensuring that trade remains both open and secure, we aim to foster a more trusted and resilient economic environment,” he added.
The President reaffirmed the Philippines’ dedication to helping build a “future-ready ASEAN” that is united in purpose, bold in vision, and inclusive in progress.
