President Marcos Stresses Good Governance in Barangay Officials Term
President Marcos has expressed respect for the legislative process regarding the proposal to extend the term of barangay officials. However, he hopes that any changes to their term lengths will align with the goal of fostering good local governance. This early emphasis on good governance highlights the importance of community development alongside political decisions.
Palace Press Officer and Undersecretary Claire Castro shared the President’s stance on June 11. “Actually po, ang extension ng terms ay nasa pagdi-discuss pa po sa Kongreso at iginagalang naman po ng Pangulo ang legislative process,” she said, underscoring that the term extension is still under congressional discussion. Castro also relayed the President’s message: “Pero nais din pong ipabatid ng Pangulo kung anuman ang pagbabago, ito po ay dapat na naaayon sa adhikain na magkaroon ng mabuting local governance at pag-unlad ng komunidad.”
Barangay and SK Elections to Proceed as Scheduled
Despite ongoing debates, the scheduled Barangay and Sanguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) will continue as planned this December. “Tuloy po iyan hangga’t wala pong naibibigay na batas kung ito ay ika-cancel or ipapa-postpone,” Castro emphasized. This reassurance comes after the House of Representatives approved a bill to extend the terms of barangay officials and Sanguniang Kabataan members on its third and final reading.
The Palace’s statement reflects a balance between respecting legislative processes and ensuring that any adjustments support the welfare of local communities. Local leaders noted that while the bill advances, the focus remains on transparent governance and sustained community growth.
