Priest Suspended for Joining Masonic Marker Blessing in Ormoc City
The Order of the Discalced Augustinians (OAD) has suspended Fr. Libby Daños, a pioneering priest in Asia, after he participated in the blessing of a Masonic marker in Ormoc City. This involvement is seen as a direct violation of Catholic teachings, sources reported.
Officials confirmed that Fr. Daños took part in the August 11 ceremony held in Barangay San Pablo, Ormoc, where the Masonic marker was unveiled. Although the priest admitted attending, he claimed he was initially unaware of the event’s full significance. Nevertheless, local leaders emphasized that the intent does not lessen the seriousness of the act.
Church Teaching on Freemasonry
The Catholic Church has long maintained a strict stance against Freemasonry. Participation or membership in Masonic groups is considered incompatible with Church doctrine, they noted. The OAD underscored this by citing the Holy See’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, which, with Pope Francis’ approval in November 2023, reaffirmed the prohibition of Catholics joining or endorsing Masonic activities.
Fr. Daños’ Response and Suspension
Fr. Daños, who has served the Asian mission for nearly three decades, has expressed deep remorse following the incident. He is cooperating fully with the ongoing canonical investigation. Pending the outcome, he has been temporarily suspended from all public ministry, sources confirmed.
OAD’s Commitment to Catholic Identity
The incident has prompted the OAD leadership to highlight the importance of vigilance in preserving Catholic identity among its members. They announced plans to strengthen formation programs, aiming to better equip priests and religious in discerning situations that might compromise their ministry.
“To our faithful benefactors, supporters, and all who have placed their trust in the OAD’s mission in Asia: we deeply regret any disappointment or confusion this incident may have caused,” the statement added, reaffirming the order’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and fidelity to Church doctrine, community members said.
About the Order of the Discalced Augustinians
The OAD is a Roman Catholic religious order rooted in the Augustinian tradition of St. Augustine of Hippo. The word “discalced” means “barefoot,” symbolizing the order’s values of poverty, humility, and simplicity. Members originally went barefoot or wore simple sandals as a testament to their commitment.
Founded in 1994 in Asia, the OAD has expanded its mission across the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, and India. This recent event serves as a reminder of the challenges religious orders face in maintaining doctrinal integrity while engaging with diverse communities.
