Pro-Duterte Senators Face Fiery Warning Over Impeachment Trial
ACT Teachers Party-list Representative France Castro has issued a strong caution to pro-Duterte senators—whom she refers to as the “kulto ni Duterte” (Duterte’s cult)—against hindering the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. Castro stressed on June 3 that the Filipino people will not tolerate any attempts to block the impeachment proceedings.
Castro’s warning comes amid reports that 11 senators, led by Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero, are considering either delaying the trial or acquitting Vice President Duterte outright. She questioned if these senators, many of whom recently won seats, are acting as part of Duterte’s loyal group.
“Ito ba yung kulto ni Duterte na mga nanalo na sa Senado?” Castro asked when pressed about the senators’ intentions. She added, “Well, itong pwersa na ito tingin ko taumbayan ang pupuksa sa inyo, doon sa ginagawa nyong pag-dedelay at doon sa balakin nyong wag ituloy ang impeachment at proteksyunan si VP Sara Duterte.”
Castro Challenges Senate Leaders to Prioritize Public Interest
In a press briefing, Castro directly challenged Senate President Escudero and other senators, both incumbent and incoming, to serve the Filipino people rather than a particular individual or family. She questioned, “With due respect sa ating Senate President, si ang tanong ko dito sino ba yung pinoproteksyunan mo… ‘yung taumbayan ba o si Sara Duterte?”
She urged lawmakers to reflect on their loyalties and responsibilities, saying, “Kaya mag isip-isip kayo ‘no. Sino ang prinoproteksyunan lalo na yung mga nanalong senador sa nakaraang eleksyon?”
Vice President Sara Duterte is the eldest daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte, a fact that adds a layer of political complexity to the situation. The impeachment trial’s progress remains a critical issue as the nation watches closely.
