Pro-Government Gathering Displays Quiet Support During Sona
In contrast to previous years marked by large crowds and star-studded concerts, this year’s pro-government gathering for President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s State of the Nation Address saw a more subdued turnout. The pro-government gathering reflected a restrained atmosphere, aligning with government calls for simplicity and solidarity with typhoon victims.
This shift was evident as organizers removed red carpets and discouraged lavish displays. Early Monday morning, several dozen self-identified Marcos loyalists convened near the Commission on Audit office along Elliptical Road in Quezon City. Many supporters brought picnic mats and shared packed meals while awaiting others.
Charito Nambio, the village coordinator for Friends of Imelda Romualdez Marcos (Firm 24-K) Inc., mentioned they expected around a thousand members throughout the day. However, it remained uncertain if that number was met. Local police have not yet released official crowd estimates. Authorities managed traffic efficiently, and the gathering remained confined to sidewalks, preventing any disruptions.
Firm 24-K Members Show Steadfast Support
Unlike the large anti-government protest at Saint Peter’s Parish on Commonwealth Avenue, which drew police estimates of 4,000 participants and organizers’ claims of up to 10,000, the pro-government gathering did not hold a formal event. Firm 24-K’s attendees, mostly middle-aged women and senior citizens, gathered quietly to express their support.
“Nasiyahan kami sa administrasyon,” Nambio shared in an interview. She expressed hope that President Marcos Jr. would continue his projects, especially those related to rice production. She highlighted her satisfaction with the P20 per kilo rice subsidy provided by the administration.
Additionally, Nambio voiced hope that water and electricity companies might be nationalized under the current administration. Although not an official campaign promise, this idea remains popular among Marcos loyalists. “Sana, sa awa ng Diyos, bumalik sa gobyerno ang pag-aari ng tubig at kuryente dahil ito ang pangunahing dahilan ng ating kahirapan,” she added.
Peaceful Assembly Reflects Somber National Mood
The subdued nature of the pro-government gathering illustrates the administration’s desire to show respect and unity amid recent calamities. The focus remained on solidarity rather than spectacle. Observers noted the calm and orderly behavior of the attendees, who preferred quiet presence over loud demonstrations.
This restrained approach contrasts sharply with past Sona celebrations but aligns with current national sentiments. While anti-government groups mobilized large crowds for protests, pro-government supporters chose a more modest show of allegiance.
