Investigation Launched into School Bullying Assault
BAYOMBONG, NUEVA VIZCAYA — Authorities in Bambang town have initiated a probe into the school bullying assault of a Grade 8 female student. The incident involved seven female peers at Bambang National High School on July 8. Local police and education officials are working together to uncover the facts behind this troubling case.
Bambang Mayor Benjamin Cuaresma III urged school officials to investigate the root cause of the assault in a formal letter addressed to Principal Luzviminda Cordero. The mayor emphasized the need to clarify all details surrounding the attack, which reportedly involved multiple students ganging up on the victim.
Details of the Assault and Viral Video
The victim, whose parent is a vegetable trader at the Nueva Vizcaya Agricultural Terminal, suffered repeated slaps, punches, and kicks. A video showing the assault went viral online, aiding authorities in identifying the assailants through their school uniforms. The footage revealed the attackers appearing proud and satisfied with their actions, prompting deep concern from the victim’s relatives.
“The students who bullied her seemed even happier and prouder of what they did,” a relative said. The physical attack only ceased when a nearby store owner stepped in to stop the violence.
Mediation and Ongoing Investigation
After the video spread, some of the involved students, accompanied by their parents, came forward. The issue has been referred to the students’ adviser, the school’s discipline prefect, and student leaders. However, not all participants have cooperated with the inquiry.
The school has since started mediation to address the conflict, while the police conduct a parallel investigation. Initial findings suggest the students, who were reportedly close friends, had consumed alcohol before the assault. The fight is believed to have arisen from a personal disagreement within their group.
Strong Condemnation and Legal Actions
School officials strongly condemned the bullying assault, affirming that such behavior will not be tolerated. Principal Cordero assured that appropriate measures will be enforced under school policies and Department of Education guidelines.
The victim’s family intends to pursue criminal and civil charges against those involved. Police reported that the victim identified her attackers as classmates and friends. One assailant allegedly became enraged over a negative comment and rumors supposedly spread by the victim. The attackers reportedly confiscated the victim’s cell phone and took turns slapping, kicking, and dragging her.
The video showed several girls repeatedly hitting the victim and pushing her toward a grassy area, with one even trampling on her. Acting provincial police director Col. Jectopher Haloc stressed the importance of full accountability and preventing future incidents. He also called on the public to help foster a safe and secure school environment through education and support.
Legal Framework and Protection for Minors
Authorities are handling the case carefully because it involves minors protected under the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act. This law prioritizes rehabilitation and reintegration rather than detention for young offenders.
Under the Anti-Bullying Act of 2013 (Republic Act No. 10627), schools must adopt policies to address bullying and impose penalties on violators. This incident highlights the urgent need for continued vigilance and effective measures to safeguard students.
