Fresh Faces in the House of Representatives Bring High Expectations
Several promising new lawmakers will soon join the House of Representatives in the upcoming 20th Congress, with many looking to the future with hope based on their family names. The presence of these young legislators brings not only enthusiasm but also goodwill earned through their surnames among their colleagues in the House.
Among these newcomers are Andrew Julian Romualdez, 25, representing the Tingog Party-list; Francis “Kiko” Barzaga, 26, from Dasmariñas City’s lone district; Ryan Christian Recto, 29, of Batangas’ 6th district; and Brian Poe Llamanzares, 33, from the FPJ Panday Bayanihan Party-list. Their entry marks a new generation of politicians eager to make their mark.
Andrew Julian Romualdez: Building on a Political Legacy
Andrew Julian Romualdez draws considerable attention as the eldest son of House Speaker Martin Romualdez and Tingog Party-list Representative Yedda Marie Romualdez. He graduated from Cornell University in New York with a degree in International Agriculture and Rural Development in 2022, after attending Institut Le Rosey in Switzerland.
At just 21, he was appointed director at Marcventures Holdings, the family’s nickel mining firm, and later took a director role at Bright Kindle Resources & Investments, another family-run business. Before these roles, he gained management experience interning at Lucciole Farm Hand. His father’s influential position as Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats president provides a strong support system as he begins his legislative career.
Francis Barzaga: Advocating for Animal Welfare with a Unique Voice
Francis “Kiko” Barzaga steps into the House as the son of the late congressman Elpidio Barzaga Jr. and Dasmariñas City Mayor Jenny Barzaga. Known for his eccentric personality, Francis openly embraces his love for cats, referring to himself as “posacat” and using the hashtag #congmeow on social media.
Despite his playful image, Francis is earnest about his advocacy. He aims to revise the local government code to include spay and neutering programs as part of city and provincial veterinary responsibilities to control the stray animal population. His sincerity is expected to gain him mentorship from lawmakers who respected his late father’s dedicated service.
Ryan Christian Recto: A New Chapter for Batangas
Ryan Christian Recto, son of Department of Finance Secretary Ralph Recto and Batangas Governor-elect Vilma Santos, will also join the House in July. With a business management degree from Ateneo de Manila University, Ryan grew up amid seasoned politicians in a family with deep roots in Batangas politics.
Though relatively private until now, Ryan is set to establish his own path in the 20th Congress. His parents’ extensive political experience, including roles as former deputy speakers and senators, provide him with valuable guidance.
Brian Poe Llamanzares: Continuing a Legacy of Service
Brian Poe Llamanzares, the only son of Senator Grace Poe and Neil Llamanzares, brings both heritage and academic excellence to the House. His grandfather, the late National Artist Fernando Poe Jr., remains an iconic figure, and Brian’s party-list focuses on “food, progress, justice,” reflecting practical priorities.
Brian graduated from Ateneo de Manila University with a political science degree in 2013 and furthered his studies through executive courses at prestigious institutions like the University of Pennsylvania, Stanford University, Harvard Kennedy School, and MIT. He earned a Master of Arts in climate and society from Columbia University in 2018 and completed his Doctor of Public Administration in 2022. Recently, he also attained a Master in National Security Administration from the National Defense College.
These new lawmakers symbolize a fresh wave of leadership in the House of Representatives. Their backgrounds blend legacy, education, and a commitment to public service, setting the stage for meaningful contributions in the 20th Congress.
