Public transport vehicles nabbed at Philippine airports
MANILA, Philippines — Authorities apprehended 46 public transport vehicles in Philippine airports from June 25 to July 1, 2025, officials said on Wednesday. The Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group (PNP AVSEGROUP) reported the seizure of various types of vehicles violating regulations within airport premises.
The vehicles nabbed included 28 public utility vehicles (PUVs), seven Utility Vehicle (UV) Express units, and 11 ‘habal-habal’ motorcycles. These actions aimed to uphold transport rules and protect passengers from illegal operations.
Details of vehicles seized across airports
Out of the 28 PUVs apprehended, 22 were from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), five from Mactan-Cebu International Airport, and one from Davao International Airport. The seven UV Express vehicles were all taken from General Santos International Airport due to serious violations such as lacking public convenience certificates and fare matrices.
Meanwhile, 10 of the 11 ‘habal-habal’ motorcycles were caught at NAIA, with one seized at Catarman Airport in Northern Samar. On July 2, nine taxis and two ‘habal-habal’ motorcycles were also impounded within NAIA and handed over to the Land Transportation Office (LTO) central office in Quezon City.
Authorities urge fair practice and public vigilance
In an interview, PNP AVSEGROUP Acting Director Police Brigadier General Jason Capoy urged taxi drivers to “fight equally” by stopping overcharging passengers. “Brothers and sisters, I hope we fight equally. As for us, this is not a personal pursuit. We only acted based on the report. We are just helping our secretaries in transportation, and, of course, the LTO, being the lead unit,” he shared.
Capoy emphasized, “We are all Filipinos. So let’s promote tourism. But we cannot promote tourism when we have persons who violate the tax rates.” He also encouraged passengers to report any overcharging incidents, advising them to take photos or videos and note details such as the driver’s name, body number, and plate number.
Passengers are urged to coordinate with the PNP AVSEGROUP or LTO to ensure that offenders face proper consequences. This collaborative effort aims to maintain fair transport services and protect the public from illegal fare practices.
