Quezon City Declares State of Calamity Amid Habagat Impact
Quezon City has officially declared a state of calamity due to the severe effects of the southwest monsoon, locally called the habagat, intensified by Severe Tropical Storm Wipha. This declaration allows the city to swiftly address the ongoing crisis and mobilize resources to protect its residents.
Local leaders reported that as of Tuesday afternoon, around 35,774 individuals, representing 10,334 families, have been relocated to various evacuation centers within the city. This mass evacuation highlights the seriousness of the flooding and the urgent need for relief efforts.
Council Approves Emergency Resolution
During a special session, the Quezon City Council passed Resolution PR23CC-054, officially declaring the state of calamity. This resolution empowers both the city and barangay officials to use existing calamity funds to support response operations and assist affected families.
Officials emphasized that this measure is crucial to fast-track aid distribution and ensure safety during the persistent rains.
Heavy Rainfall Forecast in Metro Manila
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) forecasts over 200 millimeters of rainfall across Metro Manila until Wednesday afternoon. This intense rainfall is expected to worsen flooding conditions.
In response, the national government suspended classes and government work in Metro Manila and 36 provinces on Wednesday to prioritize public safety and reduce risks during the peak of the habagat’s impact.
Residents are urged to stay alert, heed evacuation orders, and monitor weather updates as the city and neighboring areas brace for continuing heavy rains.
