Quezon City Acts on Billboard Collapse Incident
QUEZON CITY, Philippines — The Quezon City government has promised to hold responsible parties accountable following the collapse of a billboard along the C5 Katipunan-Ateneo southbound lane on Saturday. The incident, which caused damage to several vehicles and led to severe traffic congestion, occurred amid heavy rain and strong winds.
Officials noted that the billboard collapse resulted from its design, which lacked openings for air to pass through. This flaw turned it into a large sail during the Severe Tropical Storm Wipha (locally called Crising) and the enhanced southwest monsoon or habagat, causing it to fall onto the road.
Investigation Points to Structural Flaws
“Because of this, it acted like a large sail when hit by strong winds, causing it to collapse,” local authorities explained. The Quezon City government emphasized that public safety remains its highest priority and vowed to ensure that those at fault face appropriate consequences.
Immediate Response and Safety Measures
Following the incident, agencies such as the Quezon City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Department of Public Order and Safety, and Traffic and Transport Management Department quickly coordinated with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, Meralco, and the Quezon City Police District. Together, they conducted clearing operations and assisted affected motorists.
The local government urged all billboard owners and operators to inspect and maintain their structures, ensuring they are safe, sturdy, and able to withstand harsh weather conditions.
Reviewing Ordinances for Stricter Regulations
Authorities also announced plans to reassess existing regulations governing billboards. This review aims to determine whether current rules suffice or if stricter policies are necessary to prevent similar hazards in the future.
Residents are encouraged to report emergencies by contacting the QC Helpline 122.
