Quezon City Celebrates Tandang Sora Day
Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte warmly thanked President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. for officially declaring January 6 every year as “Tandang Sora Day.” This recognition was established under Republic Act (RA) 12218, marking the date as a special working holiday nationwide.
The keyphrase “Tandang Sora Day” highlights the importance of honoring Melchora Aquino, a Quezon City native and revered revolutionary known as the “Mother of the Katipunan.” Mayor Belmonte expressed deep gratitude for the national acknowledgment of Aquino’s vital role in Philippine history.
“Sa ngalan ng lahat ng QCitizens, taos-puso tayong nagpapasalamat kay Pangulong Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. sa pagdedeklara ng ika-anim ng Enero ng bawat taon bilang “Tandang Sora Day,” she said. The mayor emphasized that this declaration honors Aquino’s significant contributions during the Katipunan era and her lasting impact on the city.
A Symbol of Women’s Strength
Belmonte also praised Tandang Sora as a powerful emblem of women’s empowerment. “Si Tandang Sora ay tumatayo rin bilang matibay na simbolo ng women empowerment dahil sa kanyang mahalagang papel sa pagtataguyod ng kalayaan at katarungan para sa ating bayan,” she noted. Aquino’s dedication to freedom and justice continues to inspire many, especially women who champion civic responsibility.
Legacy That Inspires Generations
The mayor stressed that commemorating Tandang Sora Day annually will encourage Filipinos to reflect on Aquino’s legacy. “Ang paggunita sa “Tandang Sora Day” ay magsisilbi ring paalala at inspirasyon sa bawat QCitizen at bawat Filipino na panatilihing buhay ang alaala at diwa ng kabayanihan ni Tandang Sora sa kanilang pang araw-araw na pamumuhay sa pamamagitan ng pagpapakita ng malasakit, pagkakaisa, at pagtindig para sa tama,” Belmonte explained.
This celebration serves as a reminder for everyone to embody Tandang Sora’s spirit through compassion, unity, and standing up for what is right. Local leaders noted that this observance strengthens community identity and honors the heroism embedded in the nation’s history.
