Rabies Vaccination Surge Hits Zamboanga City
ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Animal Bite Center at a government hospital here has seen a dramatic rise in patients seeking rabies vaccination. This surge follows viral media reports of rabies-related deaths, pushing hundreds to rush for treatment.
On Monday, June 2, about 250 individuals went to the Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC) Animal Bite Center for rabies shots. Local officials noted that nearly 300 patients did the same two days earlier, creating an overwhelming demand for the vaccine.
Patients Driven by Fear After Media Reports
Many patients were bitten by animals, mostly dogs, months or even last year, according to hospital spokesperson Dr. Shadrina Sarapuddin. She said they hurried to the center after seeing videos and photos circulating on social media showing victims suffering from rabies symptoms before passing away.
“Nakurat mi sa mga balita ug videos sa patay nga rabies patients, mao nga dali-dali mi nangadto para bakunahan,” shared one patient in the local dialect.
Concerns Over Vaccine Supply Amid Rising Demand
While health professionals commend the success of public awareness campaigns on rabies prevention, they express worry about the decreasing stock of anti-rabies vaccines. The unprecedented influx of patients has stretched supplies thin, raising concerns about possible future shortages.
Local health authorities are exploring ways to replenish vaccine stocks quickly to meet the growing needs. They urge residents to seek vaccination immediately after animal bites and to remain vigilant.
“We appreciate the community’s response but remind everyone to avoid panic and follow proper procedures,” a health official said.
