Radio Program Host Shot Dead in Surigao del Sur
A respected radio program host and station manager, Erwin “Boy Pana” Segovia, was tragically shot dead on Monday morning while riding his motorcycle in Barangay Mangagoy, Bislig City. Local authorities confirmed they are investigating the motive behind this shocking killing.
Segovia was the voice behind “Diretsahan ni Boy Pana Segovia,” a popular morning public affairs show aired on 95.8 DXCB FM. After finishing his program, he was fatally shot in the head by unidentified attackers while on his way home.
Community and Political Reactions
Former Cantilan Mayor Carla Lopez Pichay quickly responded by offering a P1 million reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible. Pichay, who lost in the recent congressional race against former governor Alexander “Ayec” Pimentel in Surigao del Sur’s second district, emphasized the need for justice.
Segovia had supported Pichay’s mid-term election campaign as a radio block time host, making the incident even more poignant. Pichay challenged current provincial officials—including Ayec Pimentel, 1st District Rep. Romeo Momo, and Governor Johnny Pimentel—to demonstrate their commitment to justice by swiftly apprehending the killers.
“Your action or inaction will be your performance and legacy as the incumbent officials of the province,” Pichay stated on her social media.
Call for Justice and Accountability
Aside from urging government leaders, Pichay also appealed to the Diocese of Tandag to join calls for justice for those slain in political violence. Segovia, known for his bold and critical commentaries, had not discussed politics during his last broadcast and was speaking about the Mangagoy patronal fiesta before his death.
Local leaders noted that this killing adds to the alarming pattern of violence against media practitioners in the region, raising concerns over press freedom and safety.
