Rain Persists in Metro Manila and Nearby Areas
Rain continues to fall across Metro Manila and several parts of the Philippines due to the influence of a low-pressure area (LPA) and the southwest monsoon, locally known as the habagat, sources said. This combination is expected to bring scattered showers and thunderstorms to key provinces.
According to a weather specialist, the habagat will cause scattered rain over Metro Manila, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, and Occidental Mindoro. Meanwhile, the LPA is likely to result in a high chance of rainfall in regions such as Cagayan Valley, the Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos Region, and Aurora.
Low-Pressure Area Approaches Northern Luzon
The LPA was last tracked approximately 125 kilometers east-northeast of Aparri, Cagayan. It is moving northwestward and is expected to approach Extreme Northern Luzon soon. Forecasters emphasize that this low-pressure system has a medium chance of developing into a tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours.
Palawan and Western Visayas are also forecast to experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain due to the habagat. Across the rest of the Visayas and Mindanao, generally clear weather will prevail. However, afternoon and evening rain showers remain likely in many areas because of the southwest monsoon.
Tropical Storm Monitored Outside PAR
Meteorological authorities are also keeping an eye on a tropical storm named “Mun” located outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). This storm was last observed about 2,500 kilometers east-northeast of Extreme Northern Luzon. It has maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour, gusting up to 80 kilometers per hour, and is moving northwest at 15 kilometers per hour.
Despite its strength, experts note that the storm is far from the country and will not directly impact any part of the Philippines. “If we can see from our satellite image, it is far from us as it is outside our [PAR]. So it will not have a direct impact on any part of our country,” a weather specialist explained.
