Rains are forecast to persist across the Philippines Thursday, driven by the trough of a low-pressure area (LPA) within the Philippine area of responsibility and the southwest monsoon, locally called habagat, officials reported. These weather systems are expected to bring widespread cloudy skies and heavy rainfall in numerous regions.
According to a 5 a.m. update from meteorological sources, the trough of the LPA was last detected 705 kilometers east of Infanta, Quezon. It is anticipated to cause rain showers and thunderstorms in key areas including Metro Manila, Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Calabarzon provinces, the Bicol Region, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and parts of Samar and Biliran.
Low-Pressure Area’s Development and Path
Weather experts noted that the LPA currently holds a medium chance of developing into a cyclone within the next 24 hours. One specialist explained, “This means its chance of developing will be after 24 hours or beyond the 24-hour period.” If it intensifies, the system will be named Isang.
Further analysis indicates the LPA’s path will generally move west-northwest, potentially crossing northern or Central Luzon in the coming days, community members said.
Southwest Monsoon to Bring Heavy Rainfall
The habagat or southwest monsoon is expected to bring cloudy skies with a high chance of rain over Occidental Mindoro, Palawan, Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, Southern Leyte, Central Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Tawi-Tawi, and Basilan, local leaders noted. These areas should prepare for persistent wet weather conditions.
Other Regions and Weather Outlook
The rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to localized weather disturbances, officials reported. Residents are advised to stay alert for sudden weather changes and possible flooding in low-lying areas.
