Ramon Ang Volunteers to Solve Metro Manila Flooding Crisis
MANILA, Philippines — Ramon Ang, tycoon and president and CEO of San Miguel Corp., has stepped forward to volunteer in addressing the persistent flooding problem in Metro Manila. He pledged to offer his support at no cost to the government or the Filipino people.
Ang made this announcement before a press briefing held on August 8 at the San Miguel headquarters in Pasig City. The event included Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chair Don Artes and several Metro Manila mayors.
Local leaders from Manila, Valenzuela, Muntinlupa, and Las Piñas also attended the conference. Among them were Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, Valenzuela Mayor Wes Gatchalian, Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon, Las Piñas Mayor Imelda Aguilar, and Las Piñas Representative Mark Santos.
Initiative to Clear Flood-Prone Areas
“I, Ramon Ang of San Miguel, am volunteering to be the first to help the whole of Metro Manila address flooding, at no cost to the people and no cost to the government,” Ang said in a mix of Filipino and English.
He stressed the need for government authorization before proceeding, stating, “We will do the cleaning, but without your authorization, we can’t proceed.”
Ang proposed removing waste that blocks waterways and clearing structures, including houses built along riverbanks. These obstacles prevent water from flowing freely to drains and creeks, worsening the flood conditions.
Moreover, he emphasized the importance of humane relocation efforts for families living along these rivers. “Let’s provide them with housing so they won’t feel they are being evicted without due consideration,” he said in Filipino.
Collaborative Effort for Sustainable Solutions
The tycoon’s offer highlights a private sector willingness to partner with local government units to mitigate flooding challenges. By combining resources and expertise, stakeholders hope to create lasting solutions that protect vulnerable communities.
While the plan is still subject to approval, the initiative reflects a growing urgency to address flooding in Metro Manila, especially during the rainy season. Authorities and community leaders alike recognize the need for coordinated action to prevent future calamities.
