Senator Imee Marcos’ Speech Omits Brother
Reelected Senator Imee Marcos surprised many by not mentioning her younger brother, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., during her victory speech at the proclamation of the 2025 senatorial election winners. Despite their close political ties, the senator chose instead to express her gratitude to her 96-year-old mother, former First Lady Imelda Marcos, and her children, who were present during the event.
Besides her family, Senator Imee also acknowledged the support of former President Rodrigo Duterte and his daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte. She said, “Kay Presidente Duterte, ang ating dating Pangulo na Oktubre pa lamang itinaas na ang aking kamay, at sa kanyang anak na hanggang sa huling sandali si VP Inday Sara ay ako’y kinakampanya.” (To President Duterte, our former president who raised my hand as early as October last year, and his daughter VP Inday Sara, who up to the final moments continued to campaign for me.)
She added, “Ang tagumpay na ito, kahit gaano kailap at kahirap ay isang katibayan na kapag ikaw ay nanindigan para sa tama, mananalo ka.” (This victory, although seemingly elusive and difficult to achieve, is proof that if you stand up for the right things, you will win.)
Explanation for Omitting Brother in Speech
When asked in an interview why she did not mention President Marcos in her speech, Imee responded candidly, “Ay nalimutan ko na. Wala akong kodigo eh.” (I forgot already. I didn’t have notes with me.) This answer came amid the backdrop of a political rift. During the 2025 campaign, President Marcos removed Imee from the senatorial slate of the administration-backed coalition after she initiated an investigation into the arrest of former President Duterte.
Despite this, Vice President Sara Duterte later endorsed Imee’s candidacy, highlighting the complex political alliances surrounding the senator.
Senate Presidency Rumors and Impeachment Trial
Amid speculation about her ambitions, Imee denied reports that she intends to seek the Senate presidency. She stated, “Wala akong naiisip. Gusto ko lang maproklama.” (I’m not thinking about that. I just want to be proclaimed.)
Regarding the upcoming impeachment trial of the Vice President, Senator Imee said she will base her judgment on the evidence presented. “As senator, I will sit as a judge and will rely on the evidence presented,” she explained.
Overall, Senator Imee Marcos’ approach during the proclamation and her candid remarks reflect the intricate and sometimes tense relationships within the current political landscape.
