Release of Foreign Poachers Sparks Concern in Batanes Waters

Concerns Raised Over Release of Foreign Poachers

Reports indicate that the release of foreign poachers in Batanes waters has alarmed local officials and residents. The release of foreign poachers caught fishing illegally in the province’s territorial waters has raised serious concerns among community leaders and officials. According to sources familiar with the matter, the individuals involved were Taiwanese nationals apprehended during illegal fishing activities.

A local representative expressed his grave concern regarding this incident. “I have received with grave concern reports regarding the release – while at sea – of foreign nationals apprehended for alleged illegal fishing in the waters of Batanes,” the lawmaker shared in a social media post. The release has sparked questions about transparency, jurisdiction, and due process, as details remain unclear.

Threat to Marine Biodiversity and Local Fishermen

The increasing presence of foreign fishing vessels near Batanes’ shores worries many. The lawmaker, who serves as chairman of the Committee on Health, emphasized the risks these activities pose. “This poses a serious threat to our marine biodiversity and food security, and endangers our Ivatan fishermen. We must not allow foreign interests to encroach upon our waters with impunity,” he stated.

Such illegal fishing not only threatens the local ecosystem but also impacts the livelihood of local fishermen who rely on these waters for sustenance. The community’s food security and the health of marine life are at stake if these intrusions continue unchecked.

Calls for Stronger Enforcement and Accountability

In response to the situation, officials are urging relevant agencies to boost their monitoring and enforcement efforts. “I call on the relevant agencies to intensify monitoring and enforcement efforts in our northern waters, act with urgency and coordination in protecting our territorial seas, and ensure that our maritime laws are consistently upheld,” the veteran lawmaker urged.

He also promised to push for a thorough investigation into the incident. “We will not let this pass without accountability,” he declared, assuring the people of Batanes that the matter will be taken seriously.

The community and its leaders remain vigilant, hoping for swift action to safeguard their waters from illegal activities and protect their natural resources.
