Retired Police General Denies Cockfighting Aficionados Abduction Claims
MANILA, Philippines — Retired Lt. Gen. Jonnel Estomo firmly denied any involvement in the abduction of cockfighting aficionados, also known as sabungeros, amid recent accusations. The retired police general strongly rejected claims linking him to the disappearance of 34 sabungeros, emphasizing his innocence and readiness to prove it.
During a hearing before the National Police Commission (Napolcom), whistleblower Julie “Dondon” Patidongan, who is also known as Totoy, named Estomo as an “Alpha member” of the Pitmaster cockfighting group. Patidongan alleged that Estomo was involved in plans to silence him.
In response, Estomo issued a clear statement on Tuesday, stating, “I categorically deny my involvement in any manner, and I will present evidence to clear my name because my name being involved has no adequate proof.” He stressed the importance of truth over hearsay in the pursuit of justice.
“I am ready to answer any allegations at the proper forum to clear my name. I have faith in the impartial justice system and due process of the law,” Estomo added, emphasizing his confidence in legal procedures.
Background on Allegations and Investigation
Estomo served as the director of the National Capital Region Police Office from August 2022 to February 2023. The controversy arose after Patidongan claimed in a GMA News interview last June that businessman Charlie “Atong” Ang, operator of the Pitmaster cockfighting group, employed police officers to kidnap and kill sabungeros.
Patidongan formally appeared before Napolcom on Monday to file an affidavit-complaint against 18 police officers allegedly involved in these abductions and killings. These serious accusations have sparked an ongoing investigation to uncover the truth.
Estomo’s Legal Response and Ang’s Denial
Estomo directly addressed Patidongan’s accusations, stating, “To address his defamations of my character and reputation, my lawyers are preparing the appropriate case for the malicious and baseless accusations against me.” He expressed confidence that justice will eventually prevail.
Meanwhile, Charlie Ang denied all allegations leveled against him. He countered by accusing Patidongan of extortion, claiming the whistleblower demanded P300 million to avoid being implicated in the case.
The situation remains fluid as investigations continue. Both Estomo and Ang await further legal proceedings while the public watches closely.
