Arnie Teves Returns to Philippines After Arrest Abroad
BACOLOD CITY – The return of former Negros Oriental Representative Arnolfo “Arnie” Teves Jr. to the Philippines marks a significant step in the pursuit of justice for the Pamplona Massacre. Pamplona Mayor Janice Degamo expressed her gratitude toward President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Timor-Leste authorities for facilitating Teves’ repatriation.
Mayor Degamo shared a video of Teves leaving Timor-Leste on Thursday, May 29, following his arrest by Timor-Leste immigration officials at his residence the previous night. She described the day as deeply emotional for her family, stating, “Today, has been a truly emotional day for our family as we witness a powerful reminder that while justice may take time, it never forgets.”
She commended the unwavering support from the Philippine government, highlighting that their commitment has been crucial in this journey. “Their commitment has never faltered, and today is proof that when the government stands firm for what is right, justice prevails,” she added.
Timor-Leste’s Role in Justice Enforcement
The mayor also praised the courage and clarity of Timor-Leste authorities in taking a firm stance against harboring fugitives. She emphasized, “This is not just a legal issue, it is a moral one.” Timor-Leste’s decision to arrest and hand over Teves reflects their recognition that his presence threatened regional peace, security, and the rule of law.
Mayor Degamo recalled that Teves has evaded justice for more than two years, despite charges linking him to the assassination of her husband, Governor Roel Degamo, and nine other victims. She looks forward to seeing him face trial, believing this will bring closure to her family and foster lasting peace in Negros Oriental.
A Victory for Justice and Peace
“This is a victory not just for our family, but for every Filipino who dreams of a safer, fairer, and more peaceful nation,” she said. She also acknowledged the dedication of various agencies whose persistent efforts made this moment possible, stating, “Know that your tireless work and courage brought us to this moment. You stood with us even when the road was long and even when threats loomed.”
Mayor Degamo stressed that Teves’ return is a crucial milestone in the fight for truth and accountability. Allegedly the mastermind behind the brutal murder of Governor Degamo and others in March 2023, his arrest sends a clear message against impunity. “This is not just about one man’s arrest. This is about standing up to a culture of impunity that for too long has persisted in our country,” she remarked.
Looking Ahead: Justice and Healing
The mayor hopes that with Teves now in Philippine custody, other victims will find the courage to step forward and share their stories. “Today is the first day of a new Negros Oriental,” she declared, signaling hope for a future grounded in justice and peace.
