HIV Cases Surpass All Municipalities in Bohol
TAGBILARAN CITY – The Bohol Provincial Health Office (PHO) has confirmed that HIV cases have been reported in every local government unit across the province, including the capital, Tagbilaran City. This alarming trend highlights the urgent need for increased awareness and intervention to address the growing health crisis.
Ma. Cristina Estomago, a PHO official, emphasized that the spread of HIV has now affected all municipalities and the lone city in Bohol. “Every town and the city already have cases,” she stated, underscoring the widespread nature of the infection.
Recent Data and Hotspot Municipalities
Between January and March 2025 alone, the PHO recorded 17 new HIV infections. The municipalities reporting the highest number of cases include Ubay, Panglao, Tubigon, Talibon, and Tagbilaran City. Panglao, known as one of Bohol’s top tourist spots, stands out as the only municipality outside the capital with an HIV treatment center. There, patients can access antiretroviral therapy, a lifelong treatment that controls the virus and prevents its progression.
Understanding the Risk and Treatment
Health experts warn that untreated HIV can progress to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), a severe condition that compromises the immune system and may lead to life-threatening complications. To counter this, authorities urge residents to adopt safe health practices, get tested regularly, and seek early treatment.
Despite efforts, lack of awareness—especially among youth—remains a significant factor driving the rise in cases. Local leaders stress that education and open dialogue are vital to curbing this trend.
The red ribbon, a universal symbol of HIV and AIDS awareness, continues to be used in campaigns supporting those living with the disease. Such initiatives aim to reduce stigma and encourage prevention measures.
