Road Crash Incidents Along Edsa Surge in 2024

Road Crash Incidents Along Edsa and C5 Dominate 2024

MANILA, Philippines — The most road crash incidents in Metro Manila in 2024 occurred along Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (Edsa) and C5 Road, sources said. According to recent data shared by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), these two major thoroughfares accounted for the highest number of accidents this year.

Edsa recorded 8,873 road crashes, while C5 Road followed closely with 8,675 incidents. Other major roads affected include Commonwealth Avenue with 5,091 crashes, Quezon Avenue with 2,883, Roxas Boulevard at 1,659, Marcos Highway with 1,358, and R10 Road with 660 reported accidents. Altogether, these seven key routes experienced a total of 29,199 road crashes, with Edsa and C5 Road making up nearly 60% of the total.

Fatalities and Common Causes on Edsa and C5

The MMDA data revealed that collisions between trucks and motorcycles caused the most fatalities, claiming 62 lives in 2024. Car-to-motorcycle crashes followed with 55 deaths. Motorcycle-to-pedestrian incidents killed 36 people, while motorcycle-to-motorcycle and car-to-pedestrian crashes resulted in 33 fatalities each. Truck-to-pedestrian accidents accounted for 16 deaths.

Most deadly accidents involved vehicles directly hitting pedestrians. This was followed by self-inflicted accidents caused by human errors such as speeding or distracted driving. Rear-end collisions also contributed significantly to fatal crashes.

Insights from the Metro Manila Road Safety Summit

During the recent Metro Manila Road Safety Summit, MMDA Chairperson Don Artes emphasized the human cost behind these statistics. “We must never forget that each loss is not just a number on a report,” he said. “They represent real people whose life is just as valuable as any other. Lives that we vow to protect. We owe it to our people to act now.”

Road Crash Trends from 2013 to 2023

Looking at a broader timeline, MMDA data showed a 47.06% increase in road crashes from 58,447 cases in 2021 to 85,954 in 2023. This rise correlates with the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. However, the number of incidents has not yet reached the peak recorded in 2019, when 121,711 crashes were documented.

Between 2013 and 2023, road crashes in Metro Manila resulted in 2,390 driver deaths, 1,636 pedestrian fatalities, and 592 passenger deaths. The data also indicated that fatal crashes mostly happen between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., while non-fatal accidents are more common from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Metro Manila Road Safety Plan 2024-2028

At the summit, the MMDA officially launched the Metro Manila Road Safety Plan 2024-2028. This initiative aims to tackle urgent road safety concerns and foster safer, more inclusive streets throughout the capital region. Local officials and safety advocates expressed hope that the plan would reduce accidents and save lives on heavily trafficked roads like Edsa and C5.
