Under Investigation: Road Rage Incident Involving Manila Police
A police officer from the Manila Police District is currently under investigation after a road rage incident went viral online. The confrontation took place during heavy traffic in Santa Ana, Manila, on election day, May 12.
In the video, a man wearing a hoodie suddenly pulled out a gun while arguing with a motorcycle taxi driver. The man, later identified as a police officer working undercover on election duty, also grabbed the rider’s helmet during the heated exchange.
Details of the Road Rage Incident
The officer’s colleagues soon arrived and arrested the motorcycle taxi driver at the scene. The Manila Police District confirmed the officer’s role as an undercover security personnel during the elections.
Police Major Philipp Ines explained, “Itong driver na ito nagmamadali, patuloy pong kinakalambag yung kanyang top box at pilit siyang pinapausod, pero sabi ng pulis di sya makausod dahil may truck sa harap niya.”
(The driver was in a hurry and kept hitting the undercover cop’s motorcycle top box, ordering him to move forward. But the police said he could not move because a truck was blocking the way.)
He added, “Ang sabi ng pulis ay ‘Ako ay pulis,’ ang sabi ng driver ‘Wala akong pakialam kung pulis ka, umalis ka dyan sa harapan.’”
(The police said, ‘I am a police officer,’ but the driver replied, ‘I don’t care if you are a cop, get out of the way.’)
Consequences and Ongoing Investigation
The officer surrendered his firearm and is now under restrictive custody. He faces administrative charges and could face criminal charges if the motorcycle taxi driver files a complaint. Meanwhile, the arrest made by two uniformed personnel was justified by the police due to the driver’s violation of unjust vexation.
The Philippine National Police chief has ordered a thorough investigation into the road rage incident involving the Manila police. A strong warning was issued that abusive behavior by policemen will not be tolerated, with no second chances granted.
