Roberta Tamondong Embraces Life with Calm Determination
Beauty queen Roberta Tamondong has adopted a relaxed approach to life, choosing to savor every moment and handle her busy schedule with calm determination. Taking life at a leisurely pace, she values the small joys each day brings, reminding herself and others to appreciate the journey one step at a time.
Three years after proudly representing the Philippines at the 2022 Miss Grand International pageant in Indonesia, Roberta has shifted her focus to education while still attending events and engagements. “I’m currently enrolled at Treston International College studying tourism management. I attend both physical and online classes and participate in extracurricular activities like attending events,” she shared.
Changing Course and New Ambitions
Roberta initially pursued journalism but later switched majors because her previous school couldn’t balance her studies and work commitments. She expects to complete her tourism management degree in three years.
Looking ahead, Roberta revealed she plans to join another national beauty pageant soon. “I’m not closing any doors yet. At 22, I’m still young and have several years to prepare for the next pageant. I’m joining very soon, and I hope the Filipinos will support me,” she said.
Support for Fellow Beauty Queens and Advice for Aspirants
Roberta also congratulated Christine Juliane “CJ” Opiaza, who will be crowned Miss Grand International 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand, on June 3. “CJ was my batchmate in Binibining Pilipinas 2022. I was so happy when she was crowned Miss Grand International Philippines last year. I’m proud to have witnessed her journey and look forward to the formal handover of the Miss Grand International 2024 title,” she expressed.
Offering advice to young women aiming to join Miss Grand International Philippines, Roberta stressed the importance of enjoying the experience. “This is cliché, but I always tell candidates to have fun. And when you get the title, don’t forget to be friendly with the other girls,” she said.
She further emphasized the qualities the pageant seeks: “Remember that Miss Grand International is looking for 3 Bs: beauty, body, and brains. They need someone who can work under pressure, who is dedicated and willing to work hard. You must have eagerness and a strong work ethic.”
Roberta’s Pageant Experience
Roberta, who placed 5th runner-up in 2022, spoke fondly of her time with the Miss Grand International Organization. “I love the organization. They have strong work ethics. I stayed in Thailand for two months, worked hard, attended many events, and received prizes. The organization took great care of me during my stay,” she recalled.
Flores de Mayo Celebration and Cultural Highlights
Roberta also participated as one of the sagalas during the Flores de Mayo event held at SM Araneta City in Quezon City last May 30. Tess Castro, a founder of the Philippine Heritage Society which sponsored the event, explained the difference between Flores de Mayo and Santacruzan.
Flores de Mayo is a Christian devotion celebrated every May, especially popular in the provinces. Its origins trace back to the Baroque period as a month dedicated to honoring Mary. In contrast, Santacruzan is a colorful religious procession held nationwide, commemorating Queen Helena’s search for the Holy Cross.
Tess reminded attendees that Santacruzan is not a beauty pageant or fashion show but has deep religious roots. The Philippine Heritage Society was formed in 2021 by Sherwin Sozon, Nathan De Leon, and Tess Castro to fundraise for opera artists. The group organizes a ball and fashion show showcasing top Filipino designers and has earned recognition with two Aliw Awards for excellence.
