Rockslides and Floods Block Roads in Kalinga and Nueva Vizcaya

Rockslides Block Key Roads in Kalinga

Heavy rains triggered by the southwest monsoon enhanced by Tropical Storm “Isang” caused significant rockslides along the Lubuagan-Batong Buhay national road in Sitio Colong, Barangay Lower Uma, Lubuagan, Kalinga, officials reported on Saturday, August 23. Large limestone rocks fell from the mountainside, completely blocking the thoroughfare.

Authorities from the Department of Public Works and Highways-Lower Kalinga Engineering District Office warned motorists to avoid crossing the area while clearing operations are underway. Unfortunately, no alternate routes are accessible in this section, leaving travelers stranded.

Soil Erosion and Fallen Trees Close Nueva Vizcaya Road

Similarly, the southwest monsoon enhanced by Tropical Storm “Isang” caused soil erosion and uprooted trees that blocked the road connecting Barangay Kirang in Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya, to Barangay Inidian in Ambuklao, Benguet. The provincial disaster risk reduction management office in Nueva Vizcaya confirmed the blockage occurred on Friday night due to heavy rains.

Community members noted that the heavy downpour not only disrupted travel but also raised concerns about further landslides and flooding in the area.

Rising River Levels and Bridge Safety Concerns

The provincial disaster risk reduction and management office also reported a rise in the water level of the Marang River in Barangay Banganan, Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya. Villagers received warnings against crossing the slippery Mangayang Bridge, which has become hazardous due to the swollen river.

Overflow Drifts and Road Closures Affect Local Travel

Due to soil erosion, the Comon-Latar Overflow Drift in Barangay Comon, Aritao, was closed to motorists. Officials advised travelers to use the Tabueng-Tucanon-Banganan alternate road when heading to Barangay Latar or returning from there.

Moreover, the Calitlitan overflow drift in Purok 4, Baan, Barangay Road in Aritao experienced flooding and was also closed while clearing efforts continued, local leaders said.

Community Impact and Ongoing Recovery Efforts

These weather-induced road blockages have disrupted transportation and daily activities in affected areas of Kalinga and Nueva Vizcaya. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, prioritizing the safety of residents and travelers.

Clearing operations are ongoing, and officials urge motorists to stay updated on road conditions and follow advisories to avoid hazardous areas.
