Ruru Madrid’s Dream Project on Filipino Heroes

Award-winning Kapuso actor Ruru Madrid revealed his aspiration to create a project highlighting Filipino heroes Andres Bonifacio or Lapu-lapu. He shared this during an interview as his action series “Lolong: Pangil ng Maynila” approaches its finale on GMA Primetime this June 13.

Asked about his dream role, Ruru said, “Dream role is makagawa ng isang project tungkol sa isang bayani. Either Andres Bonifacio or Lapu-lapu. Gusto kong makagawa ng isang biopic na bayani natin sa Pilipinas.”

He emphasized the significance of portraying national heroes with depth and respect, acknowledging that such a project would be challenging yet fulfilling.

Ruru Madrid’s Approach to Acting and Roles

Following his Best Supporting Actor win at the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival for “Green Bones,” Ruru opened up about his acting philosophy. He admitted, “I wouldn’t say I’m a perfectionist. Para sa akin wala namang perfect and there’s no certainty when it comes to acting. Wala namang tao na pwedeng magsabi na ito ang tamang emotion. As long as nararamdaman mo yung eksena, I think yun talaga ang goal. Hindi para maging mabusisi or technical kundi hanapin ang bawa’t eksena na ginagawa natin.”

Ruru also shared that he does not limit himself by being overly selective with roles. Instead, he filters projects to find those that will challenge and help him grow. “It’s not about being choosy kundi sinasala mo lang. Kapag actor ka, you always want to challenge yourself na maging better kang artista. So hinahanap ko ngayon yung mga character na ma-cha-challenge ako bilang isang tao,” he explained.

Challenges During “Lolong” Taping

Ruru reflected on the difficulties faced while filming “Lolong.” He recounted, “Siguro ang most challenging scene ay yung may torture scene. Then mga fight scenes mula umaga hanggang madaling araw. Nagkaroon din ako ng injury. Then kahit na injured ako kailangan pa rin namin mag-taping.”

Despite these hardships, Ruru believes the series resonated with audiences because of its meaningful premise. He said, “Tinangkilik ito dahil na rin sa premise na tungkol ito sa pag-aalaga ng kalikasan. Sa season 1 pa lang. Kahit simple lang ang buhay minsan, merong mga ganid sa lipunan na dapat nating labanan. At kahit sino pwedeng maging bayani. Tungkol din ito sa paghahanap ng pag-asa kung paano natin malalabanan ang kasamaan at manaig ang kabutihan.”

Anticipation Builds for “Lolong” Finale

In the gripping final week, Lolong, played by Ruru Madrid, will push himself to the limit to protect those he loves. Viewers can expect intense scenes as Elsie, portrayed by Shaira Diaz, faces new dangers and falls into Ivan’s (Martin del Rosario) clutches once again.

Adding more excitement, Lolong’s extraordinary friend, Dakila the giant crocodile, returns at a crucial moment, heightening the battle between good and evil.

Ruru offered a sneak peek: “Very nostalgic kasi parang bumabalik din ‘yung Season 1. May mga eksena kaming ginawa na kung papaano namin shinoot noong Season 1 na kaming dalawa ni Elsie, ngayon nadagdagan na kami. Meron kaming napag-agreehan na isang eksena na parang never ko pang napapanood ‘yon sa tanang buhay ko.”

Personal Growth Through “Lolong”

Beyond the action, Ruru shared how “Lolong” influenced his life both as an actor and a person. He said, “Etong Lolong ‘yung nagpabago talaga sa buhay ko – hindi lang sa pagiging artista, kundi sa pagiging tao. Sa kabila ng lahat ng binabato sa’yo ng mundo, na bigla kang magkaka-injury, biglang magkaka-pandemic, biglang magkakaroon ng kung ano mang aksidente – ‘yun ‘yung mga nagsisilbing lakas sa akin sa akin para lalong pagbutihin ang mga ginagawa ko.”

“Lolong: Pangil ng Maynila” is a crocodile-themed action-adventure drama that follows a man’s unique friendship with a giant crocodile named Dakila. This latest chapter takes place amid the unpredictable twists in Manila’s urban life.
