Russian Delegation Arrives in Istanbul for Peace Talks
Russian President Vladimir Putin currently has no plans to travel to Istanbul for peace talks with Ukraine. However, the Russian delegation is already in Istanbul and prepared to meet with their Ukrainian counterparts. These talks would mark the first direct peace negotiations in over three years.
It was Putin’s idea to hold the talks in Istanbul, but he has not committed to attending personally. Instead, he sent a delegation led by one of his presidential advisers, Vladimir Medinsky. The Russian team is waiting for the Ukrainian side to arrive so discussions can begin.
Uncertainty Surrounds Putin’s Participation
When asked if Putin might travel to Turkey soon, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, “There are no such plans at the current time.” He added that the Russian negotiators are ready in Istanbul but the Ukrainian team has yet to show up.
Peskov also responded to questions about whether Putin would attend if U.S. President Donald Trump joined the talks. He explained that it is too early to say what level of participation will be necessary since the outcome depends on whether Ukrainian negotiators arrive and how the discussions unfold.
Overview of Upcoming Talks
President Trump, currently on a Middle East tour, mentioned he might visit Turkey for talks on Friday “if it is appropriate.” The peace talks represent a crucial opportunity to address the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine after years of stalled negotiations.
For now, the focus remains on bringing both sides together in Istanbul. The Russian delegation’s readiness shows a willingness to engage, but much depends on the Ukrainian team’s response and the direction the talks will take.
