Russia’s Top Diplomat Urges Travelers to Respect Philippine Laws Amid Prank Arrest

Russian Diplomat Calls for Lawful Conduct in the Philippines

Russia’s top diplomat in Manila has issued a strong reminder to Russian travelers to strictly follow Philippine laws. This comes after a well-known Russian-American prankster was arrested for harassing Filipinos, sparking public outrage.

Vitaly Zdorovetskiy, a vlogger with over 10 million YouTube followers, is known for posting prank videos from his travels. However, his recent antics in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, led to his arrest in April due to repeated violations of local laws.

Ambassador Stresses Discipline and Respect

Russian Ambassador Marat Pavlov emphasized that all Russians in the Philippines must comply with the country’s laws. “They are obliged to be in conformity with the law of the country they are staying in,” he said during a Victory Day event at the Russian Embassy.

According to embassy figures, about 5,000 Russians live in the Philippines, while 30,000 visited as tourists in 2024. Pavlov described many Russians living here as “really disciplined” and expressed hope that they, including diplomats, will continue to respect Filipino laws.

Handling the Case with Discretion

Despite Zdorovetskiy’s actions, Pavlov hopes that Russian visitors will not face discrimination. He also urged Filipino authorities to handle future cases involving Russians discreetly. The 33-year-old prankster is currently detained at the Bureau of Immigration’s facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig.

Zdorovetskiy faces up to 24 years in prison if convicted. He was publicly presented last month wearing an orange jail uniform and handcuffed. Notably, the Russian Embassy has offered assistance, but he has not responded.

Philippine Authorities Stand Firm on Law and Order

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. expressed disappointment over the harassment incidents. He made it clear that the Philippines will not tolerate bullying by foreigners against Filipinos.

Meanwhile, Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado stressed that while Filipinos welcome visitors warmly, respect for local customs and laws is non-negotiable. “Harassment and disruptive behavior have no place in our society,” he said. “We will take swift action against offenders.”

Indeed, the Philippines remains open to tourists worldwide. Bukod pa rito, those who abuse the country’s hospitality will face legal consequences.
