Ruth Castelo Denies Ties to Atong Ang’s Businesses
MANILA, Philippines — Ruth Castelo, the newly appointed spokesperson for the Office of the Vice President, firmly denied any current ties to the businesses of Atong Ang, the alleged mastermind behind the disappearance of several cockfighting enthusiasts, known as sabungeros. Castelo spoke out to clarify her position amid growing public interest in the case.
When asked about her supposed connection to Ang, Castelo confirmed that she served as his lawyer in 2007 during a plunder case. However, she emphasized that their professional relationship ended long ago. “As soon as he was released from Bicutan in 2009, that was the end of our lawyer-client relationship,” she stated in a recent press briefing.
She added, “We remain friends, yes, but his own endeavors and businesses, I have nothing to do with them. So no, I’m not involved with any of his activities from the time he was released from Bicutan.” Castelo’s clear denial sought to separate her from Ang’s controversial business dealings and the ongoing investigation.
Background on the Sabungero Disappearances
The disappearance of sabungeros linked to the Ang-owned PitMaster e-sabong company first surfaced as early as 2021. However, the case gained momentum in 2025 after whistleblower Julie “Dondon” Patidongan, also known as Totoy, came forward. Patidongan, one of six security guards accused of abducting the missing sabungeros, claimed that the victims were already dead and their bodies dumped in Taal Lake, Batangas.
Further allegations by Patidongan implicated not only Atong Ang but also actress Gretchen Barretto, a former judge, a former local government official, and several police officers in the disappearance and possible deaths of the sabungeros. These claims have intensified public scrutiny and calls for thorough investigation.
OVP’s Stance Amid Allegations
Despite the grave accusations surrounding Ang and his associates, Castelo maintained her distance from the ongoing probe. Local leaders noted her statements as an effort to clarify her role and protect the Vice President’s office from any perceived conflict or scandal.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities continue to seek justice for the missing sabungeros while the public watches closely. Castelo’s denial highlights the complex web of relationships involved and the importance of distinguishing personal ties from professional responsibilities.
