Vice President Sara Duterte Eyes 2028 Elections
Vice President Sara Duterte revealed that her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, has given her his blessing to run in the 2028 elections if she chooses to do so. This early endorsement comes as she continues to tease her supporters about a potential presidential bid, though she has not specified which position she might pursue.
During a recent visit to The Hague, Netherlands, where she met her detained father at the International Criminal Court (ICC), Sara shared that they discussed the upcoming 2028 elections. “He said if you want to run, then run. He said he’ll be the first to contribute and support you,” she said in an impromptu interview.
Father’s Support Despite ICC Detention
Sara added that her father hopes to be free by the time the campaign season arrives because he wants to actively campaign for her. “He said he hopes that he’s no longer detained by the time of the campaign because he really wants to campaign. But if I tell him I’m running, he’ll be the first to help,” she explained.
The vice president also shared a candid exchange about the political landscape, particularly regarding the Marcos family’s chances in future presidential races. “I told him, no one will vote for a Marcos for President. First of all, who are his allies? The dilawan. And when it comes to the elections, the dilawan will choose one of their own,” she said.
Political Alliances and Reflections on 2022
Further discussing political alliances, Sara pointed out, “Who’s even with him now, who are his allies now, Makabayan? If Makabayan were to choose, it’s like they’ve completely given up their money-making philosophy of wanting to bring down the administration and install themselves as the government. So, no one’s going to vote for him anymore.”
Sara admitted that she voted for Marcos in the 2022 elections but now regrets that decision. She believes Marcos chose her as his running mate because he doubted his chances against former Vice President Leni Robredo. Originally united under the “UniTeam” banner, their alliance fractured months after their election victories.
Their conflict escalated when Sara left Marcos’s Cabinet and later made a startling revelation about assigning someone to target Marcos, his wife, and cousin Speaker Martin Romualdez should she die.
