Palace Unbothered by Sara Duterte’s Absence at Marcos’ Fourth SONA
MANILA — Malacañang remains unfazed by Vice President Sara Duterte’s absence at the upcoming State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Duterte’s choice not to attend the event, scheduled for July 28, appears to have little impact on the Palace.
During a briefing on Friday, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro emphasized that the decision to skip the SONA was entirely Duterte’s own. “If she doesn’t attend, even though she was invited as the Vice President, again, that’s her choice,” Castro said in Filipino. She added, “If she won’t be able to hear about the programs and the accomplishments of the government and President Marcos Jr., that’s no longer our fault. It’s her choice.” This marks the second consecutive year Duterte will be absent from the president’s address, mirroring her absence in 2024.
Official Confirmation and Duterte’s Role as Designated Survivor
According to sources, House of Representatives Secretary General Reginald Velasco confirmed that the Office of the Vice President sent a letter notifying them of Duterte’s nonattendance shortly after invitations were extended to officials and dignitaries. The letter, however, did not specify the reasons behind her decision.
Last year, Duterte also skipped the SONA, serving instead as the “designated survivor.” This role involves a government official who stays at a secure location during major gatherings of top national leaders, prepared to assume the presidency if a catastrophic event occurs. This precaution underscores the importance of continuity in government leadership during critical assemblies.
Implications of the Vice President’s Absence
Duterte’s absence from the SONA has raised questions among observers about her current political stance and relationship with the administration. However, Malacañang’s response indicates a hands-off approach, respecting her individual choice without attributing political implications.
As the nation awaits President Marcos Jr.’s fourth SONA, the event will proceed as planned, focusing on the government’s programs and achievements. Duterte’s decision not to attend reflects her independent position amid the political landscape.
