Security Escort Dies Inside Mayor’s Residence in Leyte
In Albuera, Leyte, a security escort of Mayor Rolan ‘Kerwin’ Espina died inside the mayor’s residence in what authorities believe was a case of self-harm. The incident unfolded on August 7, drawing the attention of local police and regional security forces.
Law enforcement received a 911 call at 11:16 a.m. about an illegal discharge of firearms within the mayor’s compound located in Sitio Tinago, Barangay Binolho. Responding immediately, officers from the Albuera Municipal Police Station, the 1st and 2nd Leyte Mobile Force Companies, Regional Mobile Force Battalion 8, and the Ormoc City police Explosives and Ordnance Division rushed to the scene.
Initial Incident and Response
Upon arrival, residents confirmed they had heard gunshots coming from the mayor’s property. Investigators found that the security escort, identified only as “Miyok,” was armed with a Galil rifle and a .45 caliber pistol. He reportedly fired several shots inside the residence before locking himself in a second-floor room.
At the time, Mayor Espina was at the municipal hall but quickly returned to his home after receiving alerts from his security team. The mayor then tried to negotiate with Miyok, who requested the presence of media personnel during the standoff.
Negotiation and Tragic Outcome
Around 2:30 p.m., a local journalist arrived to mediate. However, after about 30 minutes, a gunshot was heard shortly after the media member left. Police attempted to get a response by throwing coconut fruits at the locked door, but there was no answer.
Officers then broke a bathroom window and used a drone to inspect the room, discovering Miyok lying motionless on the bed with a gunshot wound to the head. Blood covered the surrounding area, indicating a possible self-inflicted injury.
Scene Investigation and Evidence Collected
The Scene of the Crime Operatives team confirmed the presence of a .45 caliber pistol with a loaded magazine beside Miyok. A body search uncovered various personal items, including identification and ATM cards, as well as ₱56,570 in cash.
Authorities also coordinated with the Explosives and Ordnance Division to ensure the area was safe from any explosives or other hazards.
Ongoing Investigation and Statements
Mayor Espina has yet to issue a public statement regarding the incident. Meanwhile, police continue to investigate the motive and the full circumstances behind the shooting inside the mayor’s residence.
Local leaders noted that the case remains sensitive as the community processes the tragic event. More details are expected as the investigation progresses.
